Relief for Osteoarthritis Neck Pain
Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis which is caused by degeneration of the cartilage and joints. The damage to cartilage may be caused by disease or injury, though sometimes it is simply the accumulated stresses and strains, small amounts of damage that adds up to osteoarthritis. It is generally a disease of those who are of more advanced age.
Osteoarthritis neck pain is one of the more common results of osteoarthritis. Consider it: with almost everything you do, day to day, you use your neck muscles and move your neck. Sports can lead to injuries of the neck, and even day-to-day activities can strain your neck. This strain and damage accumulates and can become significant, causing osteoarthritis neck pain.
Osteoarthritis is not the only cause of neck pain, however. Strain of the muscles and ligaments can cause neck pain, and so can infection. However, if the neck pain is accompanied by pain or numbness that goes from the neck to the upper limbs, then it may be osteoarthritis neck pain.
As with any disease, proper diagnosis is required in order to treat the disease correctly. Commonly, X-rays are taken of the neck to see for damage, though other methods such as MRI’s may also be used. This is in addition to reviewing patient history in order to determine the possibility of other diseases causing the neck pain and numbness of the limbs.
Osteoarthritis neck pain can be treated in a number of ways. If detected early, mild painkillers may be all that is required. Massage therapy or even heat therapy may also be used to relieve the pain. Some exercises may be prescribed as well, though these should be performed with care.
In more severe cases, a collar may be used to restrict the movement of the neck in order to support the neck. Surgery may even be required if the damage to the vertebrae is great.
Aside from conventional treatments, a patient suffering from osteoarthritis neck pain can also try relaxation exercises in order to ease the pain. Taking sufficient water is also recommended, in order to better lubricate the joints and connective tissues. Vitamin supplements, omega-3 capsules, glucosamine and other herbal remedies may also be used, though it is best to consult with your doctor to make sure that your conventional treatments are not hindered by any other methods that you try.
